MC College Arson
No progress made in investigation in a month
Although more than a month has passed, no headway has been made in the investigation into the arson attack at Government MC College of Sylhet, which burnt down many rooms of the college hostel.
Besides, despite being given repeated time extensions, two probe committees that were formed to look into the incident have so far failed to submit their reports.
Enamul Monwar, officer-in-charge of Shahporan Police Station, yesterday said the investigation would take time.
There has been five cases filed so far in connection with the incident but no arrest has been made yet, he added.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Commissioner AB Barua told The Daily Star that police investigation is on the right track.
“We are proceeding steadily,” he said, adding, “We cannot charge anyone without any specific evidence and there is no hurry.”
Barua denied inaction by law enforcers saying police have been working sincerely.
Contacted, Additional District Magistrate Md Shahidul Alam, who is leading a 5-member probe committee, said they have interviewed about 50 persons about the incident including the college staff and hostel superintendent.
However, he added, “More time is needed to file the report and it may not be possible before Eid.”
Meanwhile, people, irrespective of their political affiliations or involvement in social forums, are demanding justice for the heinous crime that had burnt the century old structure.
Protest programmes are being organised daily demanding stern actions against the culprits of the arson.
On July 8, the college hostel was allegedly set ablaze by unruly activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League, a pro-Awami League organisation, after the BCL men clashed with Jamaat-e-Islami-backed Islami Chhatra Shibir clashed on the campus.
