Government must appoint sufficient teachers, allot necessary education materials and develop infrastructure of government primary schools of the capital, speakers at a public gathering demanded yesterday. They said government primary schools in the capital remain underdeveloped due to the intellectual bankruptcy of educated civil society. The speakers were addressing the public gathering organised by Nagorik Sanghati, a citizens' solidarity, in front of the National Museum in the capital. Stretching over civil society's laxity, the speakers added policy makers hardly care for the development of government primary schools hence those are treated as 'schools for poor'. Engineer Enamul Haque said ministers rarely pay visit to these schools to oversee the education condition. Offspring of ministers and bureaucrats have never been to government primary schools, so they do not care for the development of those schools, he said. He said we cannot evaluate the condition of education through considering the conditions of English medium schools and kindergartens of the city. Ifma Husain said 296 government primary schools in the capital are lacking sufficient teachers, infrastructure, and education materials to deliver proper education to the students while a good number of teacher positions and 38 headmaster positions in them remain vacant. The present government has failed to keep their promise of ensuring primary education for all children within 2012, said Ifma. Advocate Tabarok Hossain spoke among others.
