Moudud urges chief justice

BNP Standing Committee Member Moudud Ahmed yesterday urged the chief justice to take steps so that the government cannot interfere in the judiciary. A lower court judge has framed charges against opposition leaders, including BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, in a false arson case under the instruction of the government, he said. “The magistrate, who framed charges against opposition leaders in the car torching case, has privately told us that he passed the order on instruction from higher authorities of the government, although he had no authority to deal with the case,” he said. The BNP lawmaker made the call while speaking as chief guest at a discussion on “System of Government during Jatiya Sangsad Elections” at Supreme Court Bar Association in the capital. Barrister Ziaur Rahman presided over the meeting organised by pro-BNP lawyers Saidur Rahman, Taimur Alam Khandker and Monir Hossain. Speedy Trial Court-5 of Dhaka led by Magistrate Harun-or Rashid on July 31 framed charges against 46 opposition leaders, including Fakhrul, in the arson case filed with Tejgaon Police Station on April 29. The High Court on August 6 stayed for eight weeks all the operations of the Speedy Trial Court-5 and issued a rule upon the authorities to explain why Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's decision to give power to Harun-or Rashid to conduct the court should not be declared illegal. Moudud said there was no rule of law in the country now. The government has damaged all the institutions dealing with rule of law by implicating opposition leaders and workers in false and fabricated cases, he said. He also urged the prime minister to accept their demand of non-party interim government for holding next parliamentary election.
