Readers Respond

Here are some comments that came in response to Sunday's The Daily Star news report headlined “Khaleda critical of Hasina trips” Md Musa
How many trips our opposition leader made when she was in power? It is easy to criticise others but difficult to see one's own image in the mirror of ethics. Both of them need to change. Parveen Ahmed
Bangladesh did not manage to send one Olympic-class athlete out of its 160 million people, but its PM attends the opening and closing ceremony at public expense! It is disgraceful for us. Raz
What will the country achieve from the PM's attendance at the opening and closing ceremonies? Ali Tareq
We pay taxes for the development of our country, not to enjoy Olympic games. We as a poor nation cannot afford these types of visits and enjoyment. Fida Likhon
What did Khaleda Zia do during her regime? Aroondada
Public money should be used properly. Saleh Tanveer
Our political leaders tend to think of national exchequer as personal banks when they are in power. Roni Rahman
What a blatant waste of people's money! These two successive visits by the PM and her team will bring no benefit whatsoever for the nation. Bangladesh got no medal. Reaz Hassan
State coffers seem to be personal assets for those in authority. As head of the government, they often forget to exercise restraint and caution in matters of public finance. Khaleda Zia has very rightly pointed out a valid point. This is constructive politics, and we thank her. We hope that in future the PM would think many times before embarking on pleasure trips at the cost of a poor third world nation. A citizen
In our country the opposition leaders only criticise the ruling government. We saw the BNP govt too. Khaleda Zia's own sons illegally transferred a large amount of public money to overseas countries and made huge properties. Now she is crying crocodile tears because the govt is spending public money on unnecessary trips. This is simply funny. However, PM's trip in the under-developed and poor areas of her own country is more important than such types of costly trips, since we don't have quality competitors in the Olympic games.
