Singer Robi Chowdhury lodged a general diary with Kotwali Police Station on Thursday accusing a former ward councillor of Chittagong City Corporation of trying to extort money from him and threatening to kill him if he did not oblige. Robi, however, refused to disclose the amount demanded. Robi said he had just left Chittagong Club around 1:00am on Thursday when the accused, Mamunur Rashid Mamun, a ward councillor of 2000, stopped him and demanded the money. “When I refused, he called me names and threatened to kill me,” he said. On contact, Mamun, claiming to be a member of Jubo League's central committee, said, “Robi is one of my good friends and I was just kidding with him.” “He misunderstood me. I do not know why he lodged such allegations against me,” he said, adding that it might be a bid to tarnish his image in society. Chittagong city unit Awami League General Secretary Kazi Enamul Hoque Danu said he did not know whether Mamun held any such post and the party would not take responsibility of anyone's personal misdeed.
