ICT-1 rejects Azharul's bail
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 yesterday rejected the bail petition of war crimes suspect Jamaat-e-Islami acting secretary general ATM Azharul Islam.
The tribunal also directed the investigation officer to submit a progress report by October 14 on the probe over the allegations against Azharul.
The three member tribunal led by Justice Md Nizamul Huq said there was no provision of bail in the International Crimes (Tribunal) Act, 1973.
The tribunal also observed that Azharul's physical condition was not critical enough to make him eligible for bail.
Justice Nizamul, however, directed the jail doctor to provide proper healthcare to Azharul, if needed.
The tribunal on Thursday heard from the prosecution and defence on the bail petition after it was placed before it and fixed yesterday's date for the order.
Azharul, hailing from Badarganj of Rangpur, was arrested at his Moghbazar residence just over two hours after ICT-1 issued an arrest warrant against him on August 22.
The arrest warrant was issued in response to a prosecution petition and the tribunal directed police to produce Azharul before it within 24 hours of the arrest.
Azharul reportedly had direct involvement in the killing of 1,200 unarmed Bangalees in Badarganj of Rangpur on a single day during the 1971 Liberation War.
