Allow Fakhrul to go abroad: HC
The High Court yesterday directed the government not to obstruct BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir from going abroad and returning to the country.
The BNP leader is due to leave the country for the US on August 29 to attend a meeting there, Fakhrul's counsel Mahbub Uddin Khokon told The Daily star.
In response to a writ petition filed by Fakhrul, the court also issued a rule upon the government to explain in four weeks why its decision to bar him from going abroad should not be declared illegal.
The home secretary, inspector general of police (IGP), deputy inspector general of Police Headquarters, deputy commissioner of Dhaka, and officer-in-charge of immigration have been made respondents to the rule.
Fakhrul filed the petition yesterday with the HC stating that the government has reportedly restricted him from going abroad.
The daily Bangladesh Pratidin on May 6 this year published a report saying that the government has restricted 78 opposition leaders including Fakhrul from leaving the country.
The petitioner annexed a copy of the report with the petition and prayed to the HC to direct the government not to prevent him from going abroad and returning to the country.
He said the restriction from going abroad is a violation of his fundamental rights and the constitution.
After holding hearing on the petition, a vacation bench of the HC comprising Justice Quamrul Islam Siddiqui and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal passed the order and issued the rule.
