Refrain from contesting Gazipur polls
JP presidium members urge Ershad
Jatiya Party (JP) leaders yesterday urged the party chief HM Ershad to refrain from contesting Gazipur-4 by-polls fearing 'shameful' defeat.
Most of the JP presidium members yesterday made the suggestion at its meeting in the party's Banani office.
“We called upon our chairman [Ershad] not to nominate any candidate in the by-polls as the party does not find anyone who will be able to bag even honourable number of votes,” Mujibul Haque, a party presidium member told The Daily Star after the meeting.Three local JP leaders collected party nomination papers for contesting the by-polls for which last submission date is today.
Awami League on Saturday nominated Simeen Hussain Rimi, daughter of the country's first prime minister Tajuddin Ahmad for contesting the by-election slated for September 30.
The Gazipur-4 parliament seat fell vacant following the resignation of Sohel Taj as AL lawmaker on July 7.
