Buet lodges GD against 2 teachers

The authorities of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) filed a general diary with police on Saturday night accusing two of its teachers of violating a July 31 High Court injunction. The HC had issued the injunction against the agitation and strike by Buet teachers, employees and students demanding the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Prof SM Nazrul Islam and Pro-VC Prof M Habibur Rahman. Meanwhile, no classes were held at Buet for the second consecutive day yesterday. The institution opened on Saturday after a long closure. Buet Security Officer Golam Kuddus Khan filed the GD against mechanical engineering department Chairman Prof Md Ehsan and industrial engineering department Chairman Prof Abdullahil Azim. The plaintiff alleged that the teachers distributed leaflets on Saturday, encouraging resumption of the agitation. Buet Teachers' Association General Secretary Prof Ashraful Islam, however, said an “opponent quarter” had distributed the leaflets to implicate and embarrass the agitating teachers. Yesterday, Pro-VC Prof Habibur Rahman told The Daily Star that they would be able to resume classes within a week. “Many students could not return on time from different parts of the country due to a scarcity of vehicles,” he said. A few students were seen chatting in the Buet cafeteria while the hall canteens were serving regular meals, despite the low presence of students. Buet Teachers' Association started the agitation on April 7 by refraining from taking classes. They brought 16 allegations, most notably accusing the duo of giving in to political considerations in the appointment of the pro-VC and deputy registrar and restructuring of the administration. Terming the allegations baseless, the duo claimed that the teachers were agitating only to claim their posts. The teachers resumed academic activities on May 5 after the prime minister assurance to resolve the crisis. They again started demonstrating on July 10 when the authorities declared the 44-day shutdown and postponed their agitation on August 1 after the HC injunction. The Buet syndicate meets today.
