Different journalists' organisations yesterday issued a 20-day ultimatum to the government to properly conduct an investigation into the murder of journalist couple Sagar-Runi. To meet the demand, they announced to hold sit-ins and rallies in front of ATN Bangla's office in the capital's Karwan Bazar on September 16 and on the Jatiya Press Club premises on September 26. Another rally, demanding journalists' right to trade unions at newspapers, news agencies and television channels, would be held on Jatiya Press Club premises on September 11, they said. The announcement came at a press conference at Jatiya Press Club. “We (journalists) will go for tougher movement from September 26 if our demands are not met,” said BFUJ President Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, adding that they demanded investigations into the murder of all journalists till date. Sagar Sarowar, a news editor at Maasranga, and his wife Meherun Runi, a senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were found murdered in their West Rajabazar residence on February 11. Journalists' leaders also demanded arrest of ATN Bangla Chairman Mahfuzur Rahman for his “alleged involvement” in the murder. On May 30, Mahfuzur, at a press briefing in London, claimed to have video footage that hinted at the motive behind the murder. Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) President Ruhul Amin Gazi and Secretary General Abdul Jalil Bhuyian and Dhaka Union of Journalists President Omar Faruque and General Secretary Shaban Mahmud were present.
