United States Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women's Issues Melanne S Verveer yesterday commended Bangladesh Alliance for Women Leadership (BDAWL) for championing women's leadership in Bangladesh which would reduce the prevailing gender gap in society. She was addressing an open discussion organised by BDAWL at the launching of its office in the capital's Gulshan 1. Verveer also praised the contributions of BDAWL Executive Director Nasim Firdaus, stating that BDAWL, as an organisation, could be measured up to Vital Voices Global Partnership, an organisation established by US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. Addressing the discussion, Bangladesh's lawmakers Rumana Mahmood and Rowshan Jahan Sathi appreciated BDAWL's publication of Bangladesh's first ever directory of Bangladeshi women leaders in 2010. Entitled “Who's Who: Women Leaders at a Glance”, the directory highlights over 400 women leaders in various spheres of the society and government. The discussants also praised BDAWL's Leadership Training Academy, which trained over 1,000 women from different professional backgrounds in effective leadership skills, developing media relations, public speaking and communication skills, decision making and conflict resolution. United States Ambassador to Bangladesh Dan W Mozena also lauded BDAWL's contribution to establish gender equality in the country's leadership. BDAWL Chairperson Barrister Rabiya Bhuiyan, Treasurer Tahmina Rehman and Prof Ishrat Shamim also spoke at the programme.
