Charge-sheet against 33 BCL, Jubo League men filed
Police yesterday filed a charge-sheet accusing 33 activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Jubo League, pro-Awami League organisations, for attacking residents of Chhalia village in Sylhet sadar upazila on May 14.
The accused include Pankaj Kanti Dey, former joint convener of Sylhet city BCL; BCL activist Faruque alias Kala Faruque and Jubo League activists Jagoth Jyoti and Alamgir Kumkum and a Bangladeshi expatriate in the US, Abdul Muhit.
As per the charge-sheet, the accused were hired by Muhit to grab a piece of land in the village. Arriving on 30 motorcycles, two microbuses, one truck and one pickup van, the accused and some 17 others fired several blank shots, creating panic in the area.
A chase and counter-chase ensued between the accused and villagers and one and a half hours later the villagers caught 22 of the accused. They were handed over to police in presence of the sadar upazila chairman, it said.
Afterwards, one villager, Mahmud Hossain, filed one case for the attack while police filed another against the accused for illegal possession of firearms.
Police has already submitted the charge-sheet over the firearms case against the accused, including Pijush, a former BCL joint convener, and Faruque, who are on bail.
