Ganatantrik Parishad, a panel in the upcoming FBCCI election, yesterday demanded restoration of direct voting system. Leader of the panel Annisul Huq, also ex-president of the FBCCI, made the demand at a post-Eid gathering at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh in the capital. The election to the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) is scheduled for November 24. At present, FBCCI members vote to elect 30 directors who along with 18 nominated directors later elect the president and two vice presidents. Ganatantrik Parishad demands that the FBCCI members now directly vote to elect the president, vice presidents and all 48 directors. Addressing businessmen from across the country and some former FBCCI presidents, Huq proposed a signature campaign to press the demand. According to his proposal, the Parishad will establish a temporary secretariat in the capital within October 30 for conducting electoral activities. "All 30 members from our Parishad will fight in the election for the posts of 30 directors," he said. "I will not contest," he added. “We have a plan to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in June next year for her approval for direct election. "If she does not endorse the demand, the elected directors from the Parishad will resign from the FBCCI board of directors,” Huq said. FBCCI President AK Azad told the meeting that it was not possible for the current board to re-introduce the direct voting system for "some reasons".
