Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad Committee (BMOC) yesterday accorded a reception to young mathematicians who won silver and bronze medals in the 53rd International Math Olympiad (IMO) held in Argentina. Of the 5-member Bangladeshi team, Dhananjoy Biswas got silver, Sourav Das, Nur Muhammad Shafiullah and Mirza Md Tanzim Sharif got bronze medals while Adib Hasan got honourable mention. The reception was held in the capital's ICBA auditorium. Dhananjoy said with a bit more effort he wished he could have gotten the highest prize. “We enjoyed our days in Argentina”, said Adib, a class IX student, mentioning that it was his maiden journey abroad. The IMO exam had four distinctive sections -- Geometry, Number Theory, Combinatory and Algebra. Participants securing 14-20 marks won bronze medals, those with 21-27 marks received silver. Participants with marks above 28 received gold medals. Referring to the lack of female team members, President of BMOC Prof Jamilur Reza Choudhury encouraged female students to take part in such competitions. Dutch-Bangla Bank and Bangla daily Prothom Alo also congratulated the mathematicians. In the last eight years of participating in IMO, Bangladesh bagged one silver medal and six bronze medals while 15 got honourable mentions.
