Embargo on Gas, Power Supply
Ctg businesses want to cut time limit
Business leaders of Chittagong city yesterday urged the government to reduce the time limit of the recent embargoes on power and gas supply to the industries, especially the steel re-rolling mills, in Chittagong.
They also asked to ensure coordination between the Power Development Board (PDB) and Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Limited (KGDCL) so that these two organisations implement their embargoes within the same period.
The leaders said these at a views exchange meeting on “Solving the recent power and gas crisis at the industries in Chittagong” held at Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) auditorium.
Speakers said KGDCL issued a letter to the local industries last Wednesday, stating that gas supply would be suspended for two days every week.
Besides, PDB has been discontinuing power supply to the factories for twelve hours everyday from 6:00pm to 6:00am.
As both the embargoes are being implemented in different times, it was creating a hurdle to the production of the industries, said speakers.
Jameel Ahmed Aleem, managing director of KGDCL, said the total demand of gas in Chittagong per day is about 400 million cubic feet whereas they are getting only 210 million cubic feet.
Murshed Murad Ibrahim, president of CCCI, chaired the meeting while Jafor Alam, president of Chittagong Steel Re-rolling Mills Owners' Association, addressed among others.
