An inmate of the National Juvenile Correction Centre was strangled to death allegedly by his roommates early yesterday at his room in the center at Tongi in Gazipur as he reportedly protested abusing him. Deceased Shahadat Ali, 16, son of Shamsul Alam of Comilla, was a resident of Room No 4 on the fourth floor of the centre. Police said Alam, an accused in a murder case, was taken to the juvenile correction centre in 2009. Ismail Hossain, officer-in-charge at Tongi Police Station, said they recovered the body and sent it to Gazipur Sadar Hospital Morgue for autopsy. In preliminary interrogation, Alam's roommates admitted that they strangled him around 5:15am following an altercation, he said, adding that five out of six roommates took part in the killing. Permission would be sought from the court to interrogate the roommates of Alam in this connection after they are taken into custody, police said. Despite several tries over cellphone, authorities of the juvenile correction centre could not be reached for comments. According to police and some former officials of the centre, incidents of drug abuse and physical harassment among some inmates are prevalent in the centre. Under the children act, convicted or under trial juveniles are sent to the correction centre.
