The district returning officer yesterday distributed electoral symbols to the three candidates contesting in the Gazipur-4 by-election scheduled for September 30. Awami League-backed candidate Simeen Hussain Rimi has been allocated with "boat" as the election symbol, her uncle and independent candidate Afsar Uddin Ahmed Khan with "rooster", and Communist Party of Bangladesh candidate Asadullah Badal with "sickle". Afsar Uddin and Asadullah received their symbols in person, while a representative took Rimi's electoral symbol on her behalf. Returning Officer Mihir Sarwar Morshed handed over the symbols to the candidates at the district administration office. Assistant Returning Officer Muhammad Hasanuzzaman was present on the occasion. The returning officer said the candidates could now launch their election campaign in compliance with the electoral code of conducts. The Gazipur-4 (Kapasia) constituency fell vacant after AL lawmaker Tanjim Ahmed alias Sohel Taj, also son of the country's first prime minister Tajuddin Ahmad, resigned on July 7. The Election Commission announced the election schedule on August 23.
