War Crimes Tribunal
Highest fairness being maintained
Dipu Moni tells UN
Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dipu Moni informed a top UN official that the International Crimes Tribunals (ICT) in Bangladesh were being conducted at the highest degree of fairness and transparency.
Talking to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay in Geneva on Friday, she described ICT's background, explaining that it was one of the government's election pledges, said a foreign ministry press release yesterday.
“People gave a huge mandate for this trial through election and the government is unswerving in discharging its promises made to the people of Bangladesh,” she added.
All the accused have unhindered access to all legal options to defend themselves, have their own lawyers and advisers and have been ensured human rights, said Dipu Moni.
She emphasised the ICT was a demand from Bangladeshis, especially the young generation, to end the culture of impunity and render justice to victims of heinous crimes that occurred during the 1971 Liberation War.
