The government has planned to set up a 'higher education commission' to control, improve and widen scope of higher education in the country, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid told the House yesterday. “University Grants Commission has placed a proposal to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for setting up the higher education commission which is under her active consideration,” he said in response to lawmakers' queries. The minister said a UGC delegation led by its chairman AK Azad Chowdhury met Finance Minister AMA Muhith on September 6, and placed a budget for setting up the commission. “On analysis the budget proposal, it was observed that more 10.92 lakh taka will be needed with the money allocated for University Grants Commission in the 2012-13 fiscal,” Nahid said adding, “It was a matter of hope that University Grants Commission has 9.83 lakh taka surplus in its budget for the 2012-13 fiscal.” So, now the government will have to allocate only Tk1.09 lakh for setting up the higher education commission, he said.
