Man held for sending death threats to AL MP
Police yesterday arrested a man on charge of attempting to extort Tk 5 lakh from a ruling party lawmaker and for sending him death threats in Sylhet.
They arrested Zahedul Islam Ruhel, 35, from his residence in Karimpur village of Chunarughat upazila in Habiganj.
According to police, Ruhel had sent Muhibur Rahman Manik, an AL MP from Sunamganj, a text message demanding Tk 5 lakh and threatening of killing the lawmaker by bombing him if Manik fails to pay.
Officer-in-Charge of Chhatak Police Station Mostafizur Rahman said on September 8 Ruhel sent two messages to Manik-- one demanding the money and another threatening to kill Manik through bombing.
The lawmaker on the same day filed a general diary with the police station through his personal secretary Moshahid Ali, he added.
After primary questioning, Ruhel would be produced before the judicial magistrate's court in Sunamganj tomorrow [today], the OC said.
The lawmaker could not be contacted as his mobile phone was switched off.
