Huge quantity of Yaba seized, nine held

Nine people including six alleged Myanmar citizens were arrested with 9,638 pieces of yaba tablets in Chittagong on Saturday night and early yesterday. Tipped-off, a team of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab-7) conducted a drive at a house in Enayat Bazar area of the port city around 11:30pm on Saturday. The Rab members recovered 8,638 pieces of yaba tablets from the house and detained six persons including two women, said Major Rakibul Amin, an official of Rab. The arrestees are Md Liakat, 26, Ajmal Hoque, 20, Md Shafiq, 30, Abul Kashem, 28, Anwara Begum, 40, and Baby, 18. The Rab officials said all the arrestees came from Myanmar and they enlisted their names in voters' list using false identity. Before a press conference at Rab-7 headquarters at Patenga yesterday, Anwara, one of the detainees, claimed that they are Bangladeshi by birth and their ancestors came from Myanmar. They were enlisted in voters' list and obtained Bangladeshi national identity card before the last general election, she said. Meanwhile, three people were arrested with 1,000 pieces of yaba tablets from Segun Bagan Railway Canteen Gate area under Khulshi Police Station around 12:30am yesterday, said Arifuzzaman Khan, sub-inspector (SI) of the police station. The arrestees are Abdul Gani, 38, Md Baker, 25, and Md Harun, 19.
