41 tortoises recovered, one held
Forest officials of Khulna yesterday recovered 41 Sundhi tortoises and arrested a man in Batiaghata upazila of the district.
The arrestee Sanjoy Kumar, 40, hails from Agalghara of Barisal.
Sanjoy was produced before reporters, where he said he came to Khulna to sell about 37kg of Sundhi tortoises, which were captured recently from different canals and rivers of Barisal.
The Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court in Khulna sent Sanjoy to jail after the Wildlife Division filed a case against him asking compensation of Tk 1.14 lakh.
As per the court order, Abu Nasser Muhammod Yasin Newaz, divisional forest officer (DFO) of The Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Department, released the tortoises in the Bhairab river.
