A US congressman on Tuesday assured Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina that he would pursue his government to extradite Rashed Chowdhury, a convicted killer of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Peter King, chairman of Congressional Committee on Homeland Security, came up with the assurance when Hasina told him that a self-confessed convicted killer of the Father of the Nation had been staying in the USA. She also said there were instances that the US had extradited convicted killers. Peter King met Hasina at her hotel suite in New York. PM's Deputy Press Secretary Bijan Lal Dev briefed reporters after the meeting. As Hasina said Bangladesh expected speedy investigation into the recent killing of two Bangladeshis in the US, he said he would follow the cases. Peter King described the revival of the World Bank loan agreement for the construction of Padma bridge as good news for Bangladesh. The prime minister reiterated Bangladesh's demand for allowing quota- and duty-free access of Bangladesh's RMG products to the US market. “Bangladesh would see a leap in socioeconomic development if its RMG products get quota- and duty-free access to the US market.” In this connection, she said the US had already allowed some African countries to avail of duty- and quota-free RMG product export to the USA. As Peter King thanked Bangladesh for its fight against terrorism and eradicating it successfully, Hasina asserted Bangladesh's firm stand against terrorism and militancy and said her government had curbed these menaces with an iron hand. “Bangladesh had turned into a safe haven for terrorists and militants during the rule of the past BNP-Jamaat government." The country has now been freed from this stigma, she said.
