MC College Arson
Rally demands arrest of culprits
Culprits responsible for setting fire to the hostel of Government MC College in Sylhet should be immediately arrested, demanded speakers at a rally in Sylhet city yesterday.
They also demanded compensation for the victims of the arson and steps for reconstruction of the burnt down parts of the hostel and construction of new hostels.
MC College Chhatra Sangram Parishad organised the rally at Court Point area in the city.
The speakers alleged the college authorities as well as the district administration did not dare to take action against the responsible parties due to their political affiliation.
Also, no step has been taken yet against the culprits, whose names were on the probe committee report a month ago, they said.
However, the other probe committee, formed by the district administration failed to submit their report despite being given several extensions of time.
The college authority is still undecided about reopening the three other hostel blocks of the college, said Dhiresh Chandra Sarker, principal of the college, adding that the reconstruction works of the burnt down rooms would start soon.
Besides two new five-storey buildings would be built, Sarker said.
Former lawmaker and former vice principal of the college Dilder Hossain Selim, educationalist Mahmud Chowdhury, among others, addressed the rally.
Shikshangan Roksha Parishad, a forum of educationalist and social activists, and students of different colleges also joined the rally.
Meanwhile, despite the college reopening on August 29, classes in all departments could not start in full swing, as students, in apprehension of clashes between student fronts, are still hesitant to return to the college.
The college was shut down following the arson attack allegedly by activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League and Jubo League after their clash with Islami Chhatra Shibir men on July 8.
