Mohiuddin-Murad conflict intensifies
With the conflict between Awami League leader ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury and Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) President Morshed Murad Ibrahim turning bitterer, the Awami League-led 14-party alliance and the CCCI have threatened to stage protests at the same place today.
In support of Mohiuddin, also a former mayor of Chittagong city, the 14-party alliance said it would besiege the CCCI office, while the CCCI said it would stage a protest rally at its office premises today.
Mohiuddin has drawn severe criticism from Murad, also a Jatiya Party leader, for his recent protests against the alleged irregularities in the bidding for selecting a private operator of New Mooring Container Terminal at Chittagong Port.
Adding to the conflict, Murad has recently alleged that Mohiuddin's movement in the name of saving Chittagong port is a ploy to get financial advantage from the business community.
He also criticised Mohiuddin, also president of Chittagong city unit AL, saying he had become an owner of huge property and several posh houses although he did not have any business or any other sources of income.
Two defamation cases have been filed against the CCCI president for the remarks.
Talking to The Daily Star, AL city unit General Secretary Kazi Inamul Hoque Danu said the CCCI president had damaged the image of the ruling party as well as the 14-party alliance by making defamatory remarks about Mohiuddin.
