Elderly woman killed in capital
Unidentified criminals strangled an elderly woman at her residence in the capital's Khilkhet on Thursday night and stole money and gold ornaments.
The deceased, Rawshan Ara, 65, was residing with two of her sons at a rented third floor apartment of a five story-building in Namapara Khilkhet.
Rawshan's son Jahangir Alam said he found his mother lying on the floor when he entered the flat at midnight. She was declared dead at Mohakhali Metropolitan Hospital, he told The Daily Star.
Dhaka Medical College morgue sources said Rawshan Ara was strangled to death, and injury marks were found around her neck.
Alam said the killers took away Tk 2 lakh in cash, six tolas of gold ornaments, and a television. He said the house owner's two addict sons might have committed the killing, as they had been missing since the incident.
The money and gold ornaments were collected for the wedding of one of her two sons, which was supposed to take place within a few weeks, Alam said.
Khilkhet police visited the spot and said they were investigating the incident.
