Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested an intelligence official on Thursday for allegedly taking bribe from an MLM company chief. The arrestee, Majharul Islam, 30, is a junior field officer of National Security Intelligence (NSI). He was handed over to Ashulia police yesterday. Police said the NSI official took Tk 30,000 from Hasan Kabir, chairman of Life Way Bangladesh Private Ltd, a Multi Level Marketing (MLM) company headquartered in Savar EPZ area, threatening to implicate him in a recent arson at Debonair Ltd, a garment factory in Ashulia. While investigating the fire incident, the NSI official came across Zakir Hossain, an employee at Debonair Ltd, who allegedly plotted the arson. As Majharul came to know that Zakir used to work for the MLM company, he met Kabir and took Tk 30,000 from him, threatening him that he would charge him with the arson if he did not pay the money. The Debonair Ltd arson, which occurred on November 25, reportedly gutted valuables worth around Tk 10 lakh, but the incident did not figure prominently in the media. Zakir allegedly paid a female worker of the factory to set the fire. Kabir said Majharul had demanded Tk 50,000 from him, and he was supposed to receive the rest of the amount at Gulshan-2 on Thursday. As Majharul got there, Rab arrested him, he said. Kabir previously told Rab about his meeting with Majharul at Gulshan-2. Kabir filed a bribery case against the NSI official with Ashulia Police Station yesterday.
