Book launch at ULAB

The Department of English and Humanities (DEH) of ULAB organized a publication ceremony of “Jhulbarandai Megh” (The Cloud in the Balcony), a book of poems by Professor Dr. Mohit Ul Alam, Head of DEH, on 13 December 2012. It is the poet's fourth collection of poetry. The program was presided over by Professor Golam Sarwar Chowdhury of DEH. The chief guest was Professor Serajul Islam Choudhury, Professor Emeritus of DU, while Mr. Kazi Shahid Ahmed, President of BoT, ULAB, was present as the special guest. Professor Imran Rahman, VC, ULAB, welcomed the audience. The other discussants were Hasnat Abdul Hai, Dr. Mizanur Rahman Shelley, Professor Fakrul Alam, Professor Morshed Shafiul Hasan and journalist and poet Sohrab Hasan. Mrs. Nadia Rahman, Assistant Professor of DEH, anchored the program, while students of the university recited poems from the book. Professor Serajul Islam Choudhury praised the poet for using an erudite and well-chosen diction, evoking innovative imagery and for the way he has wrapped the familiar sights and sounds in a newly-created poetic language. Kazi Shahid Ahmed, in his natural humorous manner, commented that one could derive the pleasure of seeing in Alam's book, while Hasnat Abdul Hai observed that the language of the poems was serene and satisfying. Commending the wide range of subjects treated by Alam, Fakrul Alam said that Alam's sonnets had followed the Shakespearean pattern, while Jibananda Das's influence on the language could also be noticed. Dr. Mizanur Rahman Shelly hoped the book would sell well, and Sohrab Hasan noted that the poet's own personal experiences had been rendered within a greater socio-cultural context, though some of the poems may be said to be difficult to understand. The program ended with a vote of thanks by Professor Alam.
