Dhaka to continue to support UN for global peace
Dhaka yesterday reaffirmed to continue to support the United Nations in its endeavours to ensure peace, justice, democracy and development in conflict and post-conflict societies in the world.
Dhaka would extend support through its military, civilian and diplomatic contributions in UN's peacekeeping, peace-building and reconstruction operations, said Foreign Minister Dipu Moni.
She told this when UN Under-Secretary-General Ameerah Haq called on her at the foreign ministry yesterday afternoon, said a foreign ministry press release.
Ameerah, the head of the Department of Field Support (DFS) of the UN, is now on a three-day visit to Bangladesh.
Dipu Moni lauded Ameerah's outstanding achievement on her appointment as the first woman from Bangladesh to the position.
She underlined that the UN, especially the DFS headed by Ameerah, could create more opportunities for Bangladesh to engage in commercial ventures in providing vast logistical supplies like peacekeeping equipment, engineering, constructions, medical, and food.
Ameerah said, “Bangladesh has not only been a leading peacekeeper contributing country for the United Nations but also a country that brings in well-trained and highly professional peacekeepers who are logistically self-contained with a rapid deployment capacity within short notice by the UN.â€
