Jail authorities asked to produce Fakhrul before court tomorrow

A Dhaka court yesterday directed the jail authorities to produce BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir before it tomorrow on a special arrangement considering his health condition. The hearing on a 17-day remand prayer to quiz Fakhrul will be held tomorrow in his presence. The remand prayer was sought in connection with two cases filed against Fakhrul. Fakhrul is facing many charges including torching vehicles, blasting cocktails and assaulting policemen during the opposition's countrywide roadblock on December 9 last year. Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Saifur Rahman passed the order directing the jail authorities to provide a special status for Fakhrul while bringing him to the court tomorrow. He passed the order after Fakhrul's lawyer submitted a petition appealing to the court for producing Fakhrul before it on a special arrangement as he has been suffering from different ailments for a long time. Under normal circumstances, Fakhrul and other leaders are brought to the court premises using a prison van along with other accused charged with theft, robbery and murder. However, under the special arrangement, Fakhrul will be brought in a separate vehicle with no other accused. Meanwhile, the High Court on January 2 granted six months' ad interim bail to Fakhrul in two other cases filed for torching a car and blasting cocktails during the opposition alliance's December 9 programme.
