Two Bangladeshis were shot dead in South Africa in the early hours of Monday. The dead were identified as Salik Uddin, 38, and Ruhul Amin, 32, both hailing from Rustompur village of Golapganj upazila of Sylhet. According to Salik's neighbour, Abdus Salam, who is now staying in Bangladesh, the two were shot dead in Salik's grocery shop in the North West province of South Africa. Badrul Islam, Ruhul's brother, told The Daily Star that Salik and his attacker were arguing over a trifling matter in Salik's shop, when the attacker suddenly shot him. Hearing the gunshot, Ruhul, who was in an attached room, came to help Salik and was also shot, said Badrul, adding that Salik died on the spot while Ruhul succumbed to his injuries in a hospital three hours later. Salik Uddin had been living in South Africa for about 18 years and he took Ruhul to the African country about 10 years back. Ruhul used to run a shop in another area of the same district. He visited Salik on the day to arrange a trip to Bangladesh, Badrul said. The bodies would arrive home on Thursday or Friday, added Badrul Islam.
