Suranjit Sengupta, minister without portfolio, yesterday urged the opposition not to create a situation similar to that of 1/11. “I think BNP and Awami League are close to holding successful discussions regarding the next parliamentary elections. So, the opposition should not hold the public and the parliament hostage through their rowdy agitations,” he told a condolence and memorial meeting for Nirmal Sen, veteran journalist and left politician, at Central Public Library in the capital's Shahbagh. Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote, a cultural organisation, organised the programme. "We want every political party taking part in the polls. Please attend the next parliamentary session on January 27. We should hold talks and discuss there for the sake of democracy," he urged. He also said the ruling-Awami League does not want to hold any secret discussions. If political parties want to solve the issue of non-partisan interim caretaker government system, they should discuss in public. On Nirmal Sen, Suranjit said Nirmal renounced everything for the sake of the country. He donated his village house to a college and even his body to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University for medical research. Nirmal's political and personal life is a role model for everyone, he added. Film actor ATM Shamsuzzaman, and theatre personality and actor Dr Enamul Haque, among others, were present on the occasion.
