Speakers at a views exchange meeting yesterday said the government has increased prices of fuels in an excuse of reducing subsidy in energy and power sectors ignoring the public interest. The increased prices will badly affect the country's all sectors including agriculture, industry, and transportation, they said. The National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports organised the programme titled "Why the increase of fuel oil prices is irrational and anti-public interest" in the capital's Mukti Bhaban. Columnist Syed Abul Moksud said because of the rise of the fuel prices farmers will face problems to irrigate their fields during the boro season. Urging the government to reconsider the increase of the prices, he said the government's charter of changing the day has become the charter of increasing the prices. The Committee Member Secretary Prof Anu Muhammad said the government has increased the prices to ensure the interests of the IMF and World Bank; not for wellbeing of the people. The rise of the fuel prices will affect the country's economy and political situations, he said. The National Committee Convener Engineer Sheikh Muhammad Shahidullah said the government has taken a stance against the people by increasing fuel prices. Prof M Shamsul Alam of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology said the prices of fuels have been increased to hand over the fuel sector to private companies.
