Seven more accused sent to jail

Seven out of 15 charge-sheeted accused in sensational murder case of Satkhira district BNP vice president ABM Altaf Hossain were sent to jail after they appeared before Satkhira Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court with bail prayer on Thursday. Earlier, they appeared before the High Court with bail prayers and the HC directed them to appear before the lower court at Satkhira within 21 days and the time expired on February 18. Among the seven accused are incumbent Kumira Union Parishad (UP) chairman and Tala upazila Krishak Dal president Golam Mostafa, Tala upazila Juba Dal president Hafizul Islam, former Tala upazila BNP joint secretary Rasheduzzaman Raju. One of the charge sheeted accused, Prakash Sarkar of village Madra in Tala upazila, who was arrested soon after the incident, is now in jail while four others were released on bail, investigation sources said. Three other charge-sheeted accused including former BNP lawmaker Habibul Islam Habib, Khalilnagar UP chairman and Tala upazila Workers Party secretary Pranab Ghosh Bablu and Tushar Kumar Pal of village Tegharia have been absconding, court sources said. ABM Altaf Hossain, Satkhira district BNP vice president and Tala upazila BNP president, was killed along with BNP activist Habibur Rahman as criminals hurled bombs at them at Panchrasta intersection at Patkelghata Bazaar in Tala upazila on May 4 in 2004.
