10 get 14-yr RI for extracting rock near Teesta Barrage
A court here has sentenced 10 persons each to suffer 14 years rigorous imprisonment (RI) for digging deep holes to extract rocks illegally near Teesta Barrage, which posed a threat to the key point installation (KPI).
The convicts are Md Golzar Hossen, Sree Laxmichandra Roy, Abdul Latif, Delwar Hossen, Abdul Khaleque, Nawab Ali, Shahed Ali, Mojibur Rahman, Taizuddin and Bhelu Mamud, all hailing from Dimla upazila.
Additional District and Sessions Judge of Nilphamari Sharif Md Luthfur Rahman pronounced the verdict in a crowded courtroom on Thursday. Each of the convicts was fined Tk 5,000, in default, to suffer imprisonment for six months more.
They extracted illegal rocks from the ground by installing 23 boring machines at different points near to the dam.
