Call to rebuild Mitra Ghat, Sadar Ghat
Hundreds of people yesterday formed a human chain in Chittagong city demanding reconstruction of the Abhoy Mitra Ghat and Sadar Ghat situated on the northern side of Karnaphuli river.
The two ghats have remained closed due to a capital dredging project of the river, causing sufferings to thousands of “Sampan Majhi†(local boatmen), whose livelihoods solely depend on these ghats, as well as daily commuters, who cross the river via these ghats.
Twenty-one organisations, including Sampan Majhi Welfare Associations of Karnaphuli River; Charpathor Ghata; Bridge Ghata; and Ichanagar, jointly organised the human chain and a rally in front of Chittagong Press Club to press home the demand.
Thousands of people every day cross Karnaphuli river via the routes connecting Charpatharghata to Abhoy Mitra Ghat and Sadar Ghat since taking the third Karnaphuli Bridge is comparatively expensive and time consuming and a long detour for those living beside the river.
