Road crashes kill 11, injure 22

Eleven people, including a freedom fighter, were killed and 22 others injured in separate road accidents in Comilla, Tangail, Habiganj, Thakurgaon and Natore on Thursday and yesterday. A correspondent from Daudkandi reports, five people were killed and two others injured when a passenger bus rammed a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Daudkandi upazila yesterday. The deceased were Shafikul Islam, 61, a freedom fighter; Shah Alam, 40, auto-rickshaw driver; and Bachchu Mia, 60, his grandson Mahfuzur Rahman, 6, and Hazi Momtaz Uddin, 65, the auto-rickshaw passengers. They were hailing from different villages of the upazila. Abul Faisal, officer-in-charge of Daudkandi Police Station, said the accident occurred when the Noakhali-bound bus collided with an oncoming CNG-run auto-rickshaw near Baropara around 10:15am, killing the five instantly and injuring two others. Injured Momtaj Begum, 45, wife of the deceased Bachchhu Mia, and her daughter-in-law Rokshana Begum, 25, were rushed to Daudkandi Upazila Health Complex. Soon after the accident, agitating locals set the bus ablaze, the OC added. Our Tangail correspondent reports, at least three people were killed and 20 others injured when a passenger bus fell into a roadside ditch in Mirzapur upazila of Tangail yesterday. Identities of the dead could not be known immediately. Among the injured, eight were admitted to Mirzapur Kumudini Hospital, police said. The accident took place when the driver of the Dhaka-bound bus lost his control over the steering at Postkamuri Charpara around 3:30pm. Staff correspondent from Sylhet reports, a teenage boy died as a tractor ran him over on Mirpur-Jangalia road on Bahubal upazila in Habiganj district yesterday. The deceased was Sabid Mia, of village Jangalia. Our Thakurgaon correspondent reports, a man died as a power tiller hit him at Lahiri Bazar in Baliadangi upazila on Thursday night. The victim was Abdul Jalil, 55, of the Lahiri village in the upazila. Our Natore correspondent reports, a truck helper was killed on the spot as a tractor hit the truck from behind at Harishpur in Natore town yesterday noon. The deceased was Rony Hossain, 22, of Rambagha area in Nandigram upazila of Bogra. Police sent the body to Natore Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
