Cabinet okays amendment to anti-terrorism act
The cabinet yesterday approved the draft of 'Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Act-2013' to effectively curb terrorism through inter-state cooperation.
The anti-terrorism act needs to be updated to maintain global interaction as well as Bangladesh's commitment to addressing terrorism, M Musharraf Hossain, cabinet secretary, told reporters after the meeting.
He said the law is mandatory, in association with other countries, to address cross-border, waterways and airways terrorism and to check terror financing.
The cabinet also approved the draft of 'Bangladesh Water Act-2013' aiming to ensure proper utilisation of water resources.
Areas with water scarcity, water management, rules and regulations on extraction of underground water, protection of water bodies and controlling water pollution will come under the law.
It approved the draft of 'Road Maintenance Fund Board Act-2013' aiming to ensure maintenance of highways across the country under the Roads and Highways Department. Roads under the LGED would not be covered under this board, Musharraf added.
The cabinet also approved the drafts of "Protection and Rights of the Disabled Act- 2013", "The Societies Registration (Amendment) Act-2013", and "The Partnership (Amendment) Act-2013".
