BSF agrees to resolve major disputes
The region level India-Bangladesh Border conference in Shillong ended on Thursday with officials of the two countries agreeing to resolve the major disputes through discussions and by taking necessary measures in time.
Trans-border problems including illegal migration, border fencing, smuggling of explosives, firearms etc from Indian states of Meghalaya, Tripura and Assam into Bangladesh, killing of Bangladesh nationals by the Indian border guards, harbouring of criminals from across the border and other border crimes dominated the conference.
The four-day meeting between the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and the Border Security Force (BSF) began on March 10 in Shillong where Deputy Director General of BDR Brig Gen MA Bari led the 11-men BDR team and Inspector General of BSF, Tripura PK Mishihar led the 17-member Indian side.
The meeting decided that concerned sector commanders and battalion commanders will take immediate measures in case of any unwanted incident.
The Bangladesh officials denied the allegation of using Bangladesh lands by the Indian insurgents.
They demanded immediate stopping of the attack on and killing of innocent Bangladeshi civilians by the BSF and armed Indians.
The Indian officials agreed to take effective measures to stop smuggling of different items including high-powered explosives and firearms to Bangladesh, said an official.
The BSF alleged intrusion of the BDR and Bangladesh civilians into India, incidents of unprovoked firing by BDR, fishing in border river Kushiyara by Bangladeshis during odd hours and involvement of the BDR and Bangladesh nationals with smuggling of Indian counterfeit currency, cattle etc.
