Gaibandha BNP chief gets 3yr RI for extortion

A Rajshahi court has sentenced four leaders of Gaibandha district BNP including its president Hamidul Haq Channa to three years rigorous imprisonment (RI) in an extortion case. Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge ATM Meshbauddowla, who pronounced the judgment on Thursday, also fined them Tk 5 thousand each, in default to suffer three months additional imprisonment. The other accused are Sumon Dev, president of Gaibandha Jatiyatabadi Swechsasebak Dal, Mahbuber Rahman, member of district BNP and a former poura commissioner, and district BNP leader Azhar Ali. On April 23 in 2007, Asaduzzaman Hasu filed an extortion case against the four people with Gaibandha Sadar Police Station alleging that Gaibandha BNP President Hamidul Huq Channa forced him into paying Tk two lakh as toll against the auction of Sayedpur ferry ghat on the bank of River Brahmaputra, threatening to evict him from the ferry ghat in case of non-compliance.
