2 policemen hurt in Satkhira shootout
2 criminals held, arms recovered
Two policemen were injured in an exchange of fire with drive-by criminals on board a Pajero jeep at Itagachha intersection in the town Saturday night.
Police arrested two criminals and recovered two firearms and 20 bottles of phensidyl from the jeep.
Injured SI Jasim and constable Lokman Hossain of Satkhira Sadar police station were admitted to the Sadar hospital, police sources said.
The arrested criminals are Mashfiar Rahman Sabuj, 28, son of shrimp trader Fashiar Rahman of Saral village in Paikgachha upazila and Tanvirul Islam, 25, son of Manirul Islam of Munshipara in Khulna.
Tipped-off, a police team led by Sadar thana OC Abdul Kader Beg signaled a Pajero jeep to stop at the intersection. The jeep was coming from Pushpakathi in Debhata upazila.
As the jeep ignored the signal, a police team chased it. The fleeing criminals on board fired five shots at police.
Another police team led by police superintendent Abdullahel Mirza also followed and intercepted it.
Later police recovered a pipe gun, a revolver, five bullets and 20 bottles of phensidyl from the jeep and arrested the criminals. Police also seized the car.
Two cases were filed with the Sadar police station--one under the Arms Act and the other under the Narcotics Act.
Yesterday, police produced the accused before the Chief Judicial Magistrate's court here with a prayer for remand.
Judge Ranu Bilkis Banu fixed March 17 for hearing of remand prayer and sent the two arrested persons to jail, rejecting their bail prayer.
On contact, the police superintendent confirmed the incident.
