Gaibandha BNP chief gets 3-yr RI in another case

Gaibandha BNP president Hamidul Haq Channa and seven others were given two year's rigorous imprisonment yesterday in an extortion case. Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal (STT) Judge ATM Meshbaudowlla pronounced the verdict in presence of Channa, serving three years' RI in another extortion case. The other accused given two years' RI yesterday are Gaibandha Jatiyatobadi Sechchasebak Dal president Sumon Dev, BNP leader and former municipality ward commissioner Azhar Ali, and BNP activists Mahbuber Rahman, Rafiqul Islam, Jamirul Islam, Arifuzzaman Raihan and Saidur Rahman. Gausul Azam Dollar, a contractor of Gaibandha town, filed an extortion case with Gaibandha Sader police station against the eight BNP men on April 22 last year. It was stated in the case that Channa, together with other BNP men, intercepted Dollar in front of BNP office at Circular Road and demanded Tk 50,000 as toll and threatened of dire consequence for non-compliance. Earlier, on March 13, Hamidul Huq Channa and three other BNP leaders were sentenced to three years' RI by Rajshahi STT for extortion.
