Further probe into Khulna AL leader Manjurul Imam murder ordered
Khulna Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal judge has ordered further investigation into murder of Khulna City Awami League (AL) president Advocate Manjurul Imam.
Judge Abdus Salam Shikder issued the order in the afternoon following submission of a petition by special public prosecutor (PP) SM Abu Zafar with his court on Monday.
The special PP has demanded further investigation into the murder in view of changed circumstances.
Further investigation into the sensational murder is necessary as the eldest son of the slain AL leader named five local leaders of the party as planners for the murder, the special PP said in his petition.
In his deposition as a prosecution witness in court on February 25, Abdullah Harun Rumi, eldest son of Advocate Manjurul Imam said five leaders of Khulna AL planned murder of his father.
The leaders are former whip of parliament Mostafa Rashidi Shuja and his youngest brother Moazzem Rashdi Doja, former mayor of Khulna City Corporation Kazi Aminul Huq, incumbent general secretary of Khulna city Awami League Alhaj Mizanur Rahman Mizan and ward commissioner Imam Hasan Chowdhury Moina.
Rumi, in his deposition, also named eight other leaders of Khulna Awami League who were well aware of the plan of the murder.
The eight leaders include incumbent president of Khulna city Awami League and former state minister Talukder Abdul Khaleque, former lawmaker Begum Mannujan Sufian and general secretary of Bagerhat district Awami League and freedom fighter Kamruzzaman Tuku.
Seven out of the eight leaders of the party deposed as court witnesses on March 4 giving various descriptions about the murder.
Later on March 10, wife and two sons of the slain Awami League leader wrote letters to the home adviser and the inspector general of police demanding reinvestigation into the murder.
Docket of the case will be sent back to Khulna Sadar police station today from the court for further investigation to ensure Justice, said the special PP. Manjurul Imam was bombed to death beside his residence on August 25, 2003.
