'Protect consumers' rights'
Speakers at a discussion yesterday urged the caretaker government to formulate stringent laws to protect the rights of consumers.
The future generation must be saved from junk food containing excess fat, salt and protein that poses the risk, especially for the children, of suffer from various diseases including diabetics and cancer.
The policy makers do not use local products and as such they do not bother about the quality of the products made in the country.
Speakers made the observations at the discussion organised by Satkhira district unit of Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) held on the premises of Satkhira Unnayan Kendra in the town marking the World Consumers' Rights Day.
They said physicians often prescribe the medicines that they get as samples with various gifts from the pharmaceutical companies, depriving patients of proper treatment.
They suggested setting up a special court to protect consumers' rights, control of misleading advertisements and compensation for the consumers to protect their rights.
District Health education officer Abdul Hannan was chief guest and former principal of Satkhira government college Asit Kumar Majumdar the special guest at the discussion with district CAB convenor Principal Ashek-E-Elahi in the chair.
