10 sued for damaging haor environment
Department of Environment (DoE) yesterday filed a case against 10 people including the vice-president of Dakshin Surma upazila BNP, also a UP chairman, for causing harm to a natural haor, in violation of environmental laws.
Inspector Sarder Shariful Islam of Sylhet divisional office of the DoE filed the case under Bangladesh Environment Protection Law with Dakshin Surma Police Station.
The accused are Abul Kalam, vice-president of Dakshin Surma upazila BNP and chairman of Kuchai union parisad, Zamal Ahmed, Ana Miah, his brother Manik Miah and Mokon Miah of village Srirampur, Syed Tarek Ahmed and Md Shahan and Abdul Alim of village Kuchai, Masud Ahmed of Sheikhpara and Selim Ahmed of Dora under Golapganj upazila.
The accused had been engaged in unplanned digging for collection of earth using mechanised excavators from Panchkauni haor in Kuchai, Boroikandi and Silam unions of Dakshin Surma upazila, goes the case statement.
They had collected earth from the government lands on the haor as well as from the private lands around in an unplanned way and digging of huge ditches on the natural haors has already caused environmental damage, it added.
