'Form body to protect land of indigenous people'
Speakers at a meeting here yesterday demanded constitutional recognition of indigenous people and formation of a commission to restore their grabbed lands.
Nearly 100 indigenous people from five districts in Rajshahi division at a gathering here yesterday described their plight after alleged grabbing of their lands by local influentials.
The victimized indigenous people came from Natore, Pabna, Naogaon, Chapainawabganj and different areas of Rajshahi.
Jatiya Adibashi Parishad (JAP), a national body of indigenous people, organised the meeting titled 'Unveiling the land problems of indigenous people and formulating recommendations'.
Language Movement veteran Golam Arif Tipu was the chief guest at the meeting conducted by Rajshahi University teacher Dr Sujit Sarker.
Senior lawyer Hamidul Haque, JAP president Anil Marandi, secretary Rabindranath Saren, its Rajshahi unit president Bimol Rajoar, secretary Susen Kumar Shyamduar and Adibashi Sangskritik Unnayan Shangstha executive director Rajkumar Sao spoke, among others.
They said, only the government that can help the indigenous people to protect their lands.
