Dalits demand reserved seats in parliament
Gana Forum President Dr Kamal Hosssain yesterday said
Dalits are facing all sorts of racial discrimination and are deprived of basic rights ensured by the Constitution.
Being deprived of constitutional recognition, the Dalits are subject to regular repression in every sphere of life, he said.
“So all have to come forward to launch agitation to establish rights of the ethnic minority”, he said.
He was speaking a Dalit's Conference, organised by Paritran, a local NGO working for rights of Dalits. It was held at Tala upazila headquarters.
Gana Forum secretary Pankaj Bhattacharya, Father Luisi Padri, Bangladesh Dalit Human Rights Secretary Babu Lal Das, Principal Abdur Rahamn and Prof Abdul Khaleque Mani were specials guests.
"We are fighting for more than a century to ensure our rights but we are yet get those ", said Paritran executive director Milon Das.
Grabbers are destroying land of the Dalits, he said.
"Now we want education for our children but facilities are very limited," said Dipali Rani Das
They called upon the government to enact laws to ensure their rights.
The speakers also demanded reserved seat in parliament and local government bodies for Dalits and separate allocation from national budget for the community.
