40MW Khulna power plant kicks off May 28
A 40 megawatt rental power plant at Kashipur in Khulna is expected to go into production form May 28.
The director of the project that began on March 20, Md Zahidur, said Power Development Board (PDB) had been assigned to act as coordinator in the installation of the 40MW rental power plant and the foreign firm engaged in doing the installation work will have to pay demurrage at the rate of US $500 a day if it fails to go into production within the stipulated time of May 28.
Meanwhile, a reliable source said tender was invited in 2006 for installation of 210MW power plant at Goalpara in Khulna city but the foreign firm that won the bid in May last year is yet to get work order for unknown reasons.
The installation of 40MW rental power plant in Khulna is an attempt at a consolation for foregoing the plan for setting up of a 210MW power plant, said Sheikh Ashraf Hossain, secretary general of Greater Khulna Development Action Coordination Committee.
The installation of 40MW rental power plant will be of little help to meet intolerable power outage, said chairperson of Khulna Nagorik Forum Sheikh Abdul Kayyum.
At present, 400MW of electricity is being supplied against the daily need of 650 MW in the southwestern region.
