1st World Autism Awareness Day observed

First World Autism Awareness Day was observed on April 2 this year throughout the world. Like other countries, Bangladesh also celebrated the day. To mark the event, Bangladesh Society for Child Neurology, Development & Disability (BSCNDD) arranged a scientific seminar on autism entitled "Early Diagnosis, Early intervention and Maximum Benefit". Doctors, psychologists and therapists at government and private levels, teachers, students and parents of autistic children congregated the seminar to share and exchange their views. The seminar was chaired by Child Specialist Prof Md Monimul Hoque, who is also the Chairperson of BSCNDD. National Professor Dr M R Khan was the chief guest and Prof Kazi Deen Mohammad, Principal of Dhaka Medical College and Child Specialist Prof M Q K Talukder were the special guests. In the welcome address, Prof Naila Zaman Khan pointed out, "There is an alarming rise of autism spectrum disorders in the Child Development Centers situated at tertiary care public hospitals. We need to develop multi-sectoral approaches and human resources (doctors, psychologists, therapists) in this field to combat and prevent autism spectrum disorders effectively". Chairperson Prof Dr Md Monimul Hoque in his speech, urged the government to establish special institutes and boost up existing supporting system in different medical institutions and health care outlets particularly at the peripheral level.
