Suspended chief engineer testifies against KCC mayor Tayebur

Suspended chief engineer of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Liaquat Ali Sharif submitted deposition in the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Md Barekuzzaman in an extortyion case against detained Mayor Sheikh Tayebur Rahman. The extortion case, first among eight others, was filed on November 2 last year with Khulna Sadar police station by another suspended official of KCC SM Hafizur Rahman as complainant. In the case, the Mayor was accused of taking bribe of Tk 2,90,000 for giving promotion in job. The chief engineer, suspended for corruption in September last year, is a charge-sheeted prosecution witness in the extortion case. “I was present when Mayor received some bundles of 500 taka notes at his official chamber from the complainant of this case on October 3, 2004”, Liaquat told the court during deposition on Thursday. The court recorded his statement in presence of detained mayor who was also produced before the court in connection with the case. The other accused in the extortion case is KCC public relations officer Sarder Abu Taher, who went into hiding soon after filing of the case. It may be mentioned here that complainant SM Hafizur Rahman and prosecution witness Md Liaquat Ali Sharif were suspended by the Mayor on September 19 last year on specific charge of misappropriating Tk 45 lakh from the fund of municipal services project.
